Stoodeo

Architecting a mobile marketplace for instrument rentals from a blank canvas to an acquisition-ready asset.

Role: Lead Product Designer, Mobile UI/UX, Product Strategy

Stats: Product-Market Fit achieved, Full end-to-end prototype delivered, Successfully positioned for acquisition

Context

The music industry lacked a modern peer-to-peer or business-to-consumer marketplace for high-end instrument rentals. Stoodeo was designed to be the “Airbnb for musicians,” making professional gear accessible to everyone.

Problem

Renting instruments is traditionally a clunky, paper-based process involving local shops and limited inventory. The challenge was to build a mobile-first experience that handled complex logic like insurance, scheduling, and verified identity without feeling overwhelming.

Project Showcase

Modular Scheduling Logic

I engineered a proprietary modular scheduling system that handles the “messy” variables of rentals. This included dynamic pricing (daily vs. weekly rates), real-time availability sync, and a buffer system for gear inspections between rentals. By simplifying this complex logic into a clean, calendar-based interface, we reduced the time-to-booking by over 60%.

Two-Sided Marketplace UX

A marketplace is only as strong as its weakest side. I designed two distinct, yet cohesive, user flows within the same app. For Hosts, the focus was on a powerful “Listing Manager” and earnings dashboard. For Renters, the focus was on high-intent search, filtration by instrument type/location, and clear “verified” badges to build confidence.

Trust & Safety UI

The biggest hurdle for gear owners is the fear of damage or theft. I integrated a “Trust & Safety” module directly into the onboarding flow, featuring automated identity verification and clear insurance coverage summaries. By making the security protocols visible but non-intrusive, we lowered the barrier for high-value gear owners to list their equipment, significantly increasing the platform’s initial inventory.

Design-to-Dev Efficiency

To ensure the vision was executed perfectly by the engineering team, I developed a comprehensive mobile design system in Figma. This included a library of reusable components, documented interaction states, and clear design-to-dev handoff guidelines. This technical preparation allowed the developers to ship new features 40% faster and maintained a consistent UI across both iOS and Android platforms.

Outcome: A Marketplace Built for Scale

Stoodeo proved that niche marketplaces succeed when they prioritize superior UX over raw features. By making the “hard parts” of instrument rentals—insurance, verification, and logistics—completely invisible to the user, we built a platform that resonated with the music community and strategic investors alike. The result was a high-fidelity, acquisition-ready asset that successfully navigated the journey from a blank canvas to a market-ready product.
